TTC wetranslate’s Annual Translation Challenge is in its 7th Year

The UK-based language service provider, TTC wetranslate will once again challenge translation students from the University of Essex to put their language skills to the test with a real business translation commission in the seventh annual Translation Challenge.

The 7th instalment of the competition will get underway at the University of Essex on 15 January 2020 and mixed groups of undergraduate and postgraduate translation students will take part. Each team will work on a live text from a TTC wetranslate global client, who will brief the students in person at the start of the challenge.

In order to be successful, competitors must review the terminology in the native language, carry out the translation to the target language and finally, review the translated draft and make revisions to ensure accuracy. The winning team will be crowned at an award ceremony in February 2020. TTC wetranslate has been organising the competition since 2014. It set up the challenge in order to engage students studying translation at university level and give them first-hand experience of being a translator in the world of commerce and industry before completing their degree course.

Levent Yildizgoren, TTC wetranslate managing director said, “We are delighted to launch the seventh edition of the Translation Challenge. It gives students valuable experience and calls on them to work in exactly the same way that they would at a translation agency. In the seven years we have been hosting the Translation Challenge, it has proven itself to be instrumental in helping students progress their studies and progress towards employability.”

Ignazia Posadinu, Director of the MA in Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling at the University of Essex said, “Our students take the challenge well. They work really well together, we never had so much enthusiasm for translation. Surely the magic ingredient is the fact that they are translating for a real client!”

The challenge also offers the end client business benefits. John Brandler, director of Brandler Galleries said, “We sponsored the Translation Challenge with TTC wetranslate and the University of Essex in 2015. Since we got our landing pages in six different languages, we have been getting enquiries from all over the world. Taking part in the Translation Challenge has proved to be instrumental in increasing our international sales.”

As a result of its work on the Challenge, TTC wetranslate was a 2019 finalist in the ‘Best Collaboration between a University and Employer’ category in the National Undergraduate Employability Awards.
